Description |
The electric cap lamp is a battery powered lamp to be used by miners. The battery is enclosed in a case that would be worn on the miner's belt. The cord that connects the battery to the lamp is flexible rubber. The lamp was worn on the miner's cap. The battery lasted up to 12 hours and would typically be recharged at the end of the miner's shift. The electric cap lamp was created as a way to electrically light mines without the need of accessive or dangerous wiring. It was designed as part of an initiative to improve working conditions and safety in mines. Edison Electric Cap Lamp (Object Name: Edison Miner's Lamp, appears on catalog work sheet). Materials: metal, rubber, polastic?, glass. Dimensions: 4 1/2" width, 1 1/2" depth, 7 3/4" height, hose 39" to lamp housing. Embossed lettering on box (catalog work sheet has a copy of the lettering description from box), back of box has built-in brackets - appears to fit on a belt, grey metal box, scratches and roughed up, box appears to be empty. |
