Description |
Edison's Concert cylinders were larger in diameter than standard size cylinders and were first produced in late 1898. They were five inches in diameter and delivered a louder recording with better sound quality than standard cylinders. They were recorded at various speeds, anywhere from 120 to 160 rpms. The Concert cylinders were higher in price at $4 to $5, as opposed to 35 to 50 cents apiece for the standard size cylinders. These cylinders were very fragile and very few survive to the present day. The Edison Concert Phonographs displayed here could play these cylinders. Edison produced Concert cylinders until late 1911. One of the pieces on these cylinders is the hymn "Nearer My God to Thee". |
