Description |
Brown Wax Cylinder. These early wax cylinders had the capability of recording on them and then playing them back. A shaver apparatus was sold with early phonographs so a previous recording could be "erased" and a new one could be recorded. Brown wax cylinders were popular from about 1896 to 1902 and were 2-minutes in length. These early cylinders didn't have the title embossed on one end like later cylinders. A separate piece of paper included with the cylinder had the title, artist and other information. This paper was usually lost by the buyer over time. Also brown wax cylinders could be recorded anywhere from 120 to 160 rpms, making it difficult to determine what speed to play the cylinder at. |
