Ampere meter, Thomson Houston. Mechanism is mounted on rectangular base of bevelled black slate, and was probably originally enclosed in metal framed glass housing meter has both printed scale card and engraved brass scale, both showing same numbers. Plate: "Current Indicator, No. 5894, Capacity 650 Amperes, Patented Oct. 22, 1889, Manufactured by Thomson-Houston Electric Company, Lynn, Mass, U.S.A." Ammeter is an instrument that measures electric current in a circuit. (Circuit-Path for transmitting electricity) Amperage is essentially electrical current which is measured in amps. Amps tell you the amount of electrical current flowing through a system, if it is working properly, and how much a system can safely handle. (It can measure current in both homes and businesses) Ammeters can measure both Direct Current and Alternating Current electricity. This one was designed with Direct Current in mind. |
